En dua frazo, kion signifas "apenaŭ"?: "openly" aŭ "scarcely"?

tremeton = trem-eto, tremi = shiver
aferece = afer-ece = grave/serioze, sen emocio
I think the apenaŭ in this context mean he stepped "barely" in the door. In other words he opened the door and stood in the doorway. Or maybe it refers to odoro.... I feel the sentence is a bit badly formed and should have been split in two
