I’ll answer in English since you’re a fellow American and my Esperanto needs work in order to better explain grammar.
Si - oneself, itself, himself
If you say mi konas lin kaj li konas lin. Each “lin” refers to separate men, but if you say li konas sin then you’re saying he knows himself. Si refers to the previous li.
Sia- is the possessive of “si”
