Do, kio estas ĝusta? Ĉu en la antaŭa frazo mi uzus la akuzativon aŭ ne?

So which is correct? Should I use the accusative or not?

I am inclined to say not, assuming that you spread the vegemite only after it is already on the toast.

On the other hand, the accusative may be correct for the first move, if application is combined with spreading, and incorrect thereafter (unless, of course, you like the stuff and decide to put some more on). rido.gif

Deary me, I wonder how the vegemite get onto the toast? Did it just miraculously appear there? And only then do we start to spread it?!

I reckon that in most cases the use of the accusative is best in this situation, unless you like the miraculous appearance scenario.

In my opinion both ways of seeing such a sentence are fine. You can argue that only by your spreading the Vegemite appears on the toast, or you can argue that the Vegemite has already been there and then you spread it.

Personally I would use the accusative here (because that's what I'd do in German), but I don't think Miland's point of view is wrong.

I would deny the need to invoke miracles. I would say that normally something is spread on toast only after being put there. The same word ŝmiri could be used for the initial application and the subsequent spreading, and there might be some initial overlap, as I have said.

ok, fair enough! rideto.gif

My only suggestion would be to switch to Marmajto. You will be much happier with your sentence and with your breakfast lango.gif

Evildela:Ok, so I was thinking today (I know crazy right!) How would you say something like "I spread Vegemite across my toast"

The word for Vegemite in Esperanto is "Veĝemajto"
I would say:

Mi ŝmiris rostpanon per veĝemajto

Mi ŝmiris rostpanon per veĝemajto
Not sure that works as you normally spread 'per tranĉilo'.

For example,

Mi ŝmiris veĝemajton sur rostpanon per tranĉilo = I spread vegemite on toast with a knife.

Agree with you there. rideto.gif
