My 9 year old is learning Esperanto...she is wanting to know the word for "popcorn" rideto.gif

According to the Wells dictionary, it is "krevmaizo".

Does nobody say pufmaizo or krakmaizo? The individual grains of popcorn don't split do they? But they do swell up and make a sound in cooking, don't they?

Ankaŭ en franclingva vortaro troveblas "krevmaizo".
En ReVo troveblas "krevmaizo" kaj "pufmaizo" kun tiu difino: "Preparaĵo el aparta maizospeco, kies grajnoj sub varmego pufiĝas, krevas, elfluas kaj solidiĝas kiel elasta ŝvelaĵo". Oni trovas denove puf- kaj krev-.

Ne estas "j" ĉar tiu vorto venas el la hispana "maíz" /ma'is/. Kaj tiu vorto mem venas el "mahiz" (el la lingvo de amerika popolo Taino).

I don't know anyone who says pufmaizo or krakmaizo. But "krevi" means "to burst" so I think it's appropriate for popcorn.

Actually, I would personally say that "krakmaizo" would be something like fried or toasted corn kernels - the snack that is called corn nuts in America.

It is very misleading at first seeing a ai combination in EO, but since the I is stressed, it's not so confronting as it would have been in an unstressed position ridulo.gif
