For example: "This smells like fish." "Das riecht nach Fisch." "Eso huele a pescado." Is in Eo simply and plainly: "Tio odoras fiŝon."Although this usage is supported by citations in NPIV, I personally would say Tio odoras je fiŝo, or odoras kiel fiŝo
I'm not convinced that 'like' in 'this smells like fish' is a preposition. This seems to me more like Tio odoras kiel fiŝo (odoras).
In English, I think many speakers would distinguish between this smells like fish (it could be fish) and this smells of fish (has a fishy smell, but it is not fish).
In Esperanto the existential import is different in.
1. Tio odoras kiel fiŝo
2. Tio odoras samkiel fiŝo.

Hyperboreus:For example:I would probably just have said "Tio havas fiŝodoron."
"This smells like fish."
"Das riecht nach Fisch."
"Eso huele a pescado."
Is in Eo simply and plainly:
"Tio odoras fiŝon."
