It`s just enough to say:
La tempo finis
the simpler - the better
or if related to a lesson :
la leciono finis ( forfinis ).
"Fofini" gives an impression of leaving some limits , at least to me , so it`s quite nice to use it too perhaps

No, as far as I know, "fini" is transitive. You should say "la tempo finiĝis".
"la leciono finis" would only be correct if it was followed by "enuigi min"
"la leciono finis" would only be correct if it was followed by "enuigi min"
