I have been reading the example sentences at Reta Vortaro about the use of 'pro' but would appreciate some extra clarification. For example, say one bought a product at half price. Later, one noticed some small defect and said, "I hope that's not the reason it was half price!"

How about this? "Mi esperu ke tio ne estas pro la duonprezo!"

How about this? "Mi esperu ke tio ne estas pro la duonprezo!"
I wouldn't use "pro" here.

I'd use "tial" (that's why, for that reason)

Maybe something like "Mi esperas ke ne tial ĝi vendiĝis duonpreze!"

Mi esperas, ke tio ne estas la kialo por la reduktita prezo.

But you could use 'pro'.

Mi esperas, ke oni ne reduktis (duonigis) la prezon pro tio.

Thanks for these suggestions.

I will go with Erinja's suggestion, but swap the verb and adverb, and maybe use the substantive instead of 'ĝi'.

"Mi esperas ke ne tial la afero duonpreze vendiĝis!"

One further question, could I replace 'Mi esperas' with 'Espereble'? I.e. do they mean more or less the same thing, or is there some nuance I am missing out on?

"Espereble ne tial la afero duonpreze vendiĝis!"

According to my lingvosento, you can use espereble in the sense of tio, kion oni povas esperi.

Espereble, tio ne estas la kialo por la duona prezo. Espereble, li venos morgaŭ.
