sudanglo:HB, for a snake near to John (the subject) it would definitely be John saw a snake near him.

John saw the ghost near her himself would be Johano mem vidis la fantomon apud ŝi.
I told John I saw a snake near him. John saw the snake near him himself.
Mi diris al Johano, mi vidas serpenton apud li. Johano mem vidis serpenton apud si.

While it stresses that John himself is seeing the snake, mem seems redundant because with si it's clear that it's reflexive anyway.

In German it would be "Hans sah eine Schlange in seiner Nähe" - "vor sich" = "antaŭ si"
