La stampon de «malamikoj de la popolo» ricevis ne nur esperantistoj, sed ankaŭ iliaj familianoj. Kiel «malamikaj kaj subfosaj» estis konsiderataj ankaŭ la libroj en Esperanto, por multaj jaroj trafintaj en specialajn librodeponejojn, kiujn administris la organizoj de ŝtata sekureco.


I don't understand what the author means by trafintaj. Any help?

I'm guessing it's a typo and some other word was intended. It doesn't make much sense to me as it stands.

Wow, that's very good. I never saw the word used in this way but it does indeed match the third ReVo definition pretty well. I would never think to use it this way, since the English expression "to end up" seems to me more passive than the meaning I associate with trafi.

The Tekstaro amply confirms the usage of 'trafi en ion' in the sense of fall into (land in, get caught up in) - serĉu per traf\VF en\b.

However, I agree with you Todd, that there is something disconcerting along the passive/active axis in the usage here.

If I wanted to say, for example, "I ended up in Boston," I think I'd use something like Mi trovis min en Bostono, which somehow emphasizes the passive nature of the case even better than Mi troviĝis en Bostono. I wouldn't even think to use trafi for this purpose.

I suspect that the author was some Slav. In Polish we use:

on trafił do więzienia = li trafis al malliberejo = he ended up in jail

podkopujący = subfosa = subversive
pod = sub
kopać = fosi

So it looks to me as some sort word for word translation from Polish or other Slavic language (maybe Russian). It presents Slavic way of thinking.
For me "trafi" is more like "hit the target".
