I wanted to translate "It is well-known that smoking is dangerous." I've used Estas bone sciate, ke fumado estas danĝera. But there may be other ways of expressing the same thing in Esperanto. How would you put it?

darkweasel (Wasifu wa mtumiaji) 20 Desemba 2010 8:33:15 alasiri

Well, I'd definitely at least change your sciita to sciate.

Miland (Wasifu wa mtumiaji) 20 Desemba 2010 8:46:40 alasiri

Dankon, I've corrected my message. I found a parallel use of sciate in PMEG (box for section "Spertanto, sentanto", last example). And there's a number of them in Monato in the tekstaro.

But are there any other ways of doing it?

gyrus (Wasifu wa mtumiaji) 20 Desemba 2010 9:20:52 alasiri

You could say "Oni bone scias, ke fumi estas danĝere."

ceigered (Wasifu wa mtumiaji) 21 Desemba 2010 4:57:53 asubuhi

Fumado estas vaste sciata danĝero?

I was thinking of "widespreadly" or something to that effect.

BTW Darkweasel, nice new uzantbildo ridego.gif

An English passive will often be rendered in Esperanto with an active verb.

Gyrus's proposal seems very natural.

You could also say ĉiuj akceptas/komprenas la danĝero(j)n en/de fumado.

Thanks everyone!

Check out the Tekstaro. You'll find quite a few uses of 'Kiel bone konate...'

Are you sure? I found no examples searching for kiel bone konate in the tekstaro (the same thing happened with estas bone konate, BTW).
I had wondered about the verb koni. My problem is that it is used mainly for persons, who might be bone konataj.

sudanglo (Wasifu wa mtumiaji) 21 Desemba 2010 11:46:23 alasiri

But 'Estis/as bone konate' can be found in the Tekstaro (Majuskle E), as can 'estas sciate'.

I think I would prefer 'estas bone konata fakto, ke ...' to 'estas bone sciata fakto, ke ..'.

In the Tekstaro, I found 'larĝe konata fakto', 'vaste konata fakto' and 'monde konata fakto'
