En la Tekstaro the usage of manki is overwhelmingly in a non-sentimental way.

But I can't see that 'vi mankis al mi, Susan' wouldn't be understood sentimentally because in what other way could you experience the mankon.

Of course, 'we missed you at the party' in English is open to two different interpretations. But for one of these you might well say 'ni maltrafis vin' in Esperanto, leaving 'manki' for the other meaning.
